The Historic Town of Reefton
The town of Reefton owes its origins to the discovery of extensive gold bearing quartz reefs last century. With
mining came technology and innovation. In August 1888, Reefton turned on electric street lighting before any
other town in the Southern Hemisphere - indeed even before the fashionable suburbs of London and New York.
Reefton is a living, working heritage town with extensive historical sites and buildings. It is surrounded by the
magnificent Victoria Conservation Park which offers a range of unique experiences including outdoor adventure and
historical trails amongst its wild, rugged granite mountains, luxuriant beech forest and abundant birdlife - a
recreational and sporting paradise.
